The Gangotri Trail

This fascinating trail takes us into the beautiful Garhwal Himalayas also known as Dev Bhoomi of the Land of Gods.  Gangotri is a sacred site among all Hindus where it is believed that the River Ganga came cascading down to earth from the heavens. Further north is the true source of the River the glaciated snout of Gaumukh from where the river flows down to the plains.

Day 1: On your arrival we meet you at the International Airport in New Delhi which is most often in the early hours of the morning and drive you to your pre-reserved hotel. The entire day is free for you to either relax in your room or explore this exciting city, its colourful bazaars and medieval and colonial monuments.

Day 2: We leave after breakfast and drive to the holy city of Haridwar in the Himalayan foothills with its profusion of temples lined up above the sacred River Ganga (Ganges) that originates high above and flows 2000 Kms across the plains to spill into the Bay of Bengal. We check into a pre-reserved hotel for the night.

Day 3: We continue on our drive through beautiful forested hillsides and foaming streams and rivers to the small sacred town of Uttarkashi far up to the north. The road passes a couple of small towns and village. On the way you also get to see magnificent views of the Greater Himalayas mountain peaks in the distance. Check into your hotel at Uttarkashi for the night.

Day 4: After an early breakfast a scenic drive of 8 hours through forests of Pine and Fir and Birch takes us to the starting point of our trek the small hamlet of Gangotri on a hill ridge above the serenely flowing Ganga. Gangotri at 3050m has numerous temples which attract thousands of pilgrims each year. On arrival at we check into a comfortable guesthouse for the night.

Day 5: We begin our trek the first 9 Kms of which we walk trek by walking upstream along an ancient trail to the small hamlet of Chirbasa with its scenic hillsides full of Deodar trees at 3600m. We camp a little ahead of this small village.

Day 6: Today's 5 Km trail leads over a hillside and then emerges into a plain barren landscape and up to the beautiful hamlet of Bhojbasa which is more barren as it is a higher altitude. We set up camp a little ahead for the night.

Day 7: We cross a barren plain without any vegetation as we make our way along the river bed 4 Kms to the source of the River Ganga the glaciated snout of Gaumukh. It is a large cave of ice from which the river flows in a small stream. We set up camp nearby for the night.

Day 8: Today's trail or glacial walk is over an ice field basically a glacier with crevasses. The trail at first narrow slowly widens out and we reach the base of the climb to Tapovan a small shrub plain high in the hills. We climb about 2000 feet to this plain which has been a regular site for numerous Sadhus and Ascetics who come here to meditate under the sombre gaze of the three snow covered Bhagirati mountain peaks at 6000m and the majestic Shivling. As you stand gazing at these breathtaking panoramic views of towering mountain peaks you can experience a sense of calm and absolute silence. We camp here for the night at Tapovan at 4350m.
