Manali Hamta

Months: May to November
Number of Days: 5
Maximum Altitude: 4270m
Grade: Moderate to Strenuous

Day 1: Manali Hamta Village: 4 hours (Now jeepable)

Day 2: Hamta Village Chhika: 4-5 Hours
At 3000 metres, Chhika is essentially a lush green sloping hill side and a popular grazing ground for the local shepherds in season. The trail, we cover during the trek is fringed by thick forests of Oak, Pine and Maple and Cedar. After about 5 hours we set up camp in the rich Chikka meadows overlooking the upper Beas River Valley.

Day 3: (3660m) The trail now becomes a bit rocky with large boulders and small rocks as we ascend towards the tree line and above. The 4 hour walk goes initially through verdant meadows carpeted with wild flowers and then through bare hills from where we get excellent views of the mountainous landscape till we reach our camp site at Balu Ka Ghera (meaning Bear's shelter) high above the tree line.

Day 4: Balu Paddar Hamta Pass (4270m)
The trail climbs steeply through barren hills and over boulders and rocks till we reach the crest of the 42670metre high Hamta Pass. From the saddle of the pass get excellent views of the surrounding mountain peaks including Deo Tibba and the needle shaped Indrasen Camp below the pass .

Day 5: Hamta Pass Juara
The descent is rather steep but enjoyable. A 5 hour walk gets you to Juara where you camp for the night.

Day 6: Juara Manali:
Today's the last day of our trek as we descend the thickly forested hillsides to the main road head on the left banks of the River Beas. From here we take surface transport back to Manali.
