The Manali- Miyar Valley Trail into Zanskar

This fascinating trek takes you through one of Lahaul's western most valleys'– the exquisite Miyar Valley. This valley is known for its profusion of wild flowers and medicinal herbs especially during July and August and its breathtaking landscape. From the Miyar valley we follow a pleasant trail to the Gumba Nullah after which it ascends on scree and moraine and later over glacier with patches of ice and snow to the Kang La pass. The Kang La requires technical equipment to cross and ropes, carabineers and crampons are essential. Day 1: On arrival at Delhi airport we meet you and transfer you to your pre-reserved hotel. The morning is free to relax. In the afternoon we take on a half day old Delhi city tour. See the Red Fort, the mosque known as Jama Masjid both built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan many centuries ago and stroll along the narrow backstreets selling mouth watering kebabs and pilaffs. (Optional as you may want spend the day relaxing in your hotel). Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 2: We leave Delhi early after breakfast and drive to the city of Chandigarh where we arrive by early afternoon. Check into your pre-reserved hotel and then after lunch visit the famous 25 acre Rock Gardens known for its unusual figures and sculptures created out of industrial and urban waste items. We then take you to the famous Rose Gardens Asia's largest rose garden, spread over 30 acres of land where you get to see over 50,000 rose-bushes with 1600 species of this delightful flower. We then return to your hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 3: We leave after a leisurely breakfast and drive through the foothills into Himachal Pradesh and passing a few towns and numerous villages arrive at the hill resort of Manali by late afternoon. On arrival we check you into your pre-reserved hotel. In the evening take a stroll along the Mall Road the main shopping area and if you prefer dine out at one of the finer restaurants in town. Try Chopsticks for authentic Chinese, The Mayur for excellent Indian cuisine and the Khyber for North West Indian food and Sagar for vegetarian food from Gujarat and Punjab. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 4: After a leisurely breakfast we head north and crossing the 13,050ft / 3978m high Rohtang Pass descend into the Lahaul valley with the River Chandra flowing alongside. We head west to the small town of Udaipur (2650m) passing green fields of barley, potato and peas close to small quaint villages huddled under the gaze of rugged barren mountains. Crossing the confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga Rivers at Tandi Bridge we ascend towards Udaipur. En-route we stop to visit the famous Trilokinath temple revered by both Buddhists and Hindus and the Mrikula Devi Temple. We check into a guesthouse or camp a little ahead of the town.

Day 5: After breakfast we follow a jeepable road and enter a gorge before emerging into the beautiful Miyar valley. We cross a bridge before Chimrat (2090m) village and continue on the left bank of the Miyar Nullah (stream). This village is distinguished by the many prayer flags, Mani walls and small dwellings. We set up camp near the banks of the Miyar Stream.

Day 6: This is a delightful day's trek as we walk through green meadows carpeted with myriad wild flowers in fascinating colours. Fringing this riot of colours are green fields of Millet and Peas. We cross the bridge over the Miyar stream and set up camp a little further at a bifurcation point of the trail near Urgos village (3250m) from where one track leads to the Menthosa peak (6443m).

Day 7: The trail now ascends gradually through the valley floor and goes over a new bridge on the left of the valley towards the pretty village of Khanjar at 3450m. We camp beyond the last police check post on our trek ahead of the village or climb up a gradual incline to the highest village in Miyar the Tharang village ahead of which is a beautiful campsite with magnificent views of the snow peaks of Chenab valley.

Day 9: Today's walk is through extensive grazing grounds and pastures where you meet yak herders on their way to the base of the Taralasuma La pass. We however head towards the Gumba Nullah (3900m) at the head of the valley from where you see some of the more known Lahaul peaks some over 6000m. We camp near the Nullah.

Day 10: From here leaving the valley behind us we ascend a rocky trail towards a shepherd's campsite known locally as Khai (4100m) and then emerge into some more open meadows after crossing a few gurgling mountain streams. We camp here at 4200m which we call Camp 1.

Day 11: From our Camp I we ascend and descend over slopes of terminal moraine climbing to the left of the 28 Km long Miyar glacier. It can be a bit strenuous as we climb steadily till we reach a confluence of another glacier flowing in from the east. From here it gets a bit easier as we climb over what appears to be black ice. We easily negotiate the exposed crevasses and set up our Camp II at 4750m. 6 - 7 Hours.

Day 12: We continue our ascent after roping up towards the Kang La pass (5450m) over a snowfield which is not as hard as it appears. The pass itself is a kilometre and a half long with rocky cliffs to the north and snow covered slopes which we leave behind to the south. We descend a little before setting up camp III at 4800m near two streams.

Day 13: We follow a narrow trail on the right side of the valley and cross numerous streams and pass inviting green campsites till we reach a rocky plateau. From here the trail descends steeply through boulder fields and meadows and then levels out as we approach Bardan village. This is a beautiful village with its Gompa standing on a small rocky blob. 5 Hours.

Day 14: Today a 6 hour walk along a well defined path beside the Tsarap Chu takes us to the largest town in Zanskar – Padum situated at 3540m. We set up camp outside the village amidst luxurious fields.

Day 15: Leaving Padum after breakfast we board out Jeep to drive to Kargil on the main Srinagar – Leh highway and check into a comfortable hotel. Your evening is free to stroll along this charming town still maintaining its medieval appearance.

Day 16: After breakfast we leave for our final destination the capital of Ladakh – the laid back town of Leh. En-route we briefly visit the dramatically located Lamayuru Monastery and drive into Leh by evening where we drop you at your pre-reserved hotel.

Day 17: Spend a relaxed day strolling around Leh bazaar and window shop for antiques and other artefacts including some semiprecious stones, silver jewellery and coral rings among other fascinating merchandise. In the afternoon drive 40 Kms to the wealthiest and most famous monastery in Ladakh – the Hemis Gompa. Located in a side valley it houses the largest thangka in Ladakh displayed once every twelve years. The next viewing will be in 2016. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 18: In Leh Morning excursion to Phyang Gompa. This Gompa is 20 Kms from Leh on the right side of Leh-Srinagar road. The beautiful statues and Thangkas are worth seeing. Also visit Spituk Gompa which lies on the right side of Srinagar-Leh road about 6 Kms short of Leh Proper. Some very interesting Thangkas are pride of this monastery. Afternoon free. Dinner overnight Hotel

Day 19: Leh/Delhi (Flight) Transfer to domestic airport in time to board flight for Delhi. Arrive and transfer to hotel for overnight stay.
