Meghalaya Literally meaning the abode of clouds the name closely resembles the climatic conditions in this state where the small hamlet of Mawsynaram is situated where the heaviest rainfall in the world has been recorded. It is a breathtakingly scenic state with a panorama of undulating green hills, fertile river valleys, and meandering rivers; a state where you'll find an amazing 250 species of Orchids, serene lakes, waterfalls and glistening mountain streams. Geographically divided into the three regions of Garo Hills (West); Khasi Hills (Central) and Jaintia Hills (East) Meghalaya is home to a number of tribes. Its exotic flora comprises of over 2000 flowering plants and over 250 species of Orchids besides ferns, fungi and lichens besides balsam palms and other trees. Meghalaya also sustains a rich wildlife including elephants, tiger, Indian bison, and various species of deer, leopards, apes and monkeys. Among the reptiles are snakes, lizards and the avian population is abundant especially in the higher altitudes. Meghalaya also is home to over 500 species of beautiful exotic butterflies.

Shillong the capital of the state is set amidst spectacular surroundings and offers the visitor a pleasant climate throughout the year. You can see why it's called “Scotland of the East” after strolling through this picturesque hill station where you see a remarkable fusion of Indian and Scottish architecture in many buildings and the charming cottages and Bungalows. Shillong was home to a number of British settlers who came and built summer cottages all over its rolling hillsides. Today it's a vibrant happening town with the younger generation with similar tastes of most of the major metros' young crowd – music, clothing, fashion, dancing and fast food joints. The markets are teeming with local produce and a variety of exquisitely handcrafted items hand woven shawls, handicrafts, orange flower honey and cane work. Shillong also offers good eating establishments and fine hotels.

The Golf Course here is considered one of the best in the country having been built in 1898 by a few British Civil Officers. A visit to the Lady Hydari Park is also a must for its exotic flowering plants and landscaped gardens besides a mini zoo. To feast your eyes on some of the most rare and most beautiful butterflies and exotic insects visit the Museum of Entomology that also has the most sought after ‘ Kaiser I- Hind” butterfly. The Shillong peak the highest peak at 1965 metres offers you excellent vast views of the plains and the towering snow clad Himalayan peaks. In the adjacent countryside there are numerous waterfalls cascading down sheer cliffs and hillsides. Meghalaya is a paradise on earth and a nature lover's delight with February to May being the best months to visit.

The Meghalaya Nature and Culture Tour

Day 1: On arrival the Kolkata airport you are met by our representative and taken to your pre-reserved hotel. We take you an afternoon tour of this famous city once the capital of British India. We visit the Victoria memorial built in 1921 standing proudly at the southern end of the lush green Maidan then explore the Indian Museum the largest in the country with its exhaustive collections relating to archaeology, geology, anthropology and zoology. In the evening return to your hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 2: After breakfast we drive you to the airport to take the flight to Guwahati city the capital of Assam and the gateway to the north eastern states of India. On arrival we take you to your pre-reserved hotel. The rest of the day is spent at leisure. In the evening we take you on a sunset cruise on the River Brahmaputra. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 3: This morning we take a three hour (100 Kms) drive to Shillong the capital of misty Meghalaya also called Scotland of the East. On arrival we check you into your pre-reserved hotel. After lunch we take a stroll around the Bara Bazaar with its large display of merchandise including handicrafts and imported goods. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 4: The entire day is spent sightseeing around this vibrant town. In the morning we visit the Shillong peak to get a bird's eye view of the lush green countryside and the entire town of Shillong. Then it's on to the Museum, Emporium, the beautiful Ward's Lake, Lady Hyadri Park and the Museum of Entomology with its enchanting collection of butterflies. In the evening return to your hotel.

Day 5: Today we drive to the wettest spots on earth the small hamlets of Cherrapunji and Mawsynaram . En-route we visit the Elephant Falls, the Mauthrap and Mawsami caves and return to Shillong by late evening.

Day 6: After breakfast we drive to the emerald green Umain Lake at the Orchid Palace resort. Have lunch and then proceed to Guwahati where we check you into your hotel for the night.

Day 7: After breakfast we drive you to the airport to catch your flight to Kolkata . On arrival check into your pre-reserved hotel and await your onward flight to your next destination.
