The Southern Kashmir Valley Tour
Delhi - Srinagar - Anantnag - Kokernag - Verinag - Srinagar - Yusmarg - Srinagar - Delhi - Agra - Delhi

This pleasant tour takes you south east of Srinagar to the picturesque hamlets of Anantnag, Kokernag and Verinag. You also get to visit the expansive meadows of Yusmarg named after Jesus who is believed to have lived here leaving Palestine after his crucifixion. Here you get close glimpses of Kashmiri culture and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Kashmir.

Day 1: Catch the early morning flight from Delhi to Srinagar. On arrival check into a luxurious houseboat which will remain your base for the time spent in this wonderful valley. Take a stroll around the old city window shop and view the unusual merchandise on sale. In the afternoon after lunch stroll along the boulevard and then visit the Shri Pratap Singh Museum known for its ancient sculptures from old Hindu temples besides various other archeological treasures. Return to your houseboat for a relaxed evening on the lake.

Day 2: Drive to the small hamlet of Anantnag and a bit further to the Mughal Gardens of Achabal. This exotic garden was planned by the Empress Noor Jehan and has fountains, pools, and cascading small falls. The emphasis is on crystal clear water along with numerous varieties of flower beds. Drive a bit further to Kokernag which has a fresh water spring and a vast garden with an abundance of colour from its numerous flowers. The spring water of Kokernag is said to have curative powers and is the best water in Kashmir according to the locals. A number of walks can be had around this flat country side ringed by distant towering mountains. Return to your houseboat by evening.

Day 3: Drive 40 Kms south to the upland meadows of Yusmarg at 7790ft / 2377m. Literally meaning meadow of Jesus Yusmarg is believed to be the place where Jesus spent his last years after his crucifixion. The grassy slopes of this beautiful meadow are fringed by gigantic pine and fir trees. En-route visit the town of Cherar-e Sharif where the Sufi saint Sheikh Nuruddin is located. This shrine is an excellent example of the fine woodwork of Kashmiri craftsmen. Return after an eventful day to your houseboat.

Day 4: Visit the beautifully landscaped and planned Chasmashahi, Nishat and Shalimar gardens. All three gardens were designed by Mughal emperors and are still well maintained. From here we head uphill to the Pari Mahal (Fairies' Palace). This palace was originally a retreat for Sufis and is full of crumbling stairways leading to terraces planted with flowers. Built by Dara Shikoh a Mughal prince, the palace is still quite secluded. Return to your houseboat by evening.

Day 5 : Catch the early morning flight back to Delhi and check int your hotel. The entire day is free for relaxing and shopping.

Day 6: Drive to Agra city - a 5 hour drive after an early breakfast. In Agra visit the legendary Taj Mahal, the Fort and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri 37 Kms away. In the evening drive back to Delhi and your hotel in time for dinner.

Day 7: Day free till its time (usually late night) to catch your onward international flight to your next destination.
