The Western Himachal Culture Tour
Delhi - Dharamshala - Kangra - Pong Dam - Chamba - Pathankot - Delhi - Agra - Delhi

Starting from Delhi this tour takes you trough the lush green Kangra valley to the sprawling township of Dharamshala. Further uphill is the laid back settlement of Macleodgunj where the Tibetan Government in exile has its headquarters. Experience the cheerful lifestyle and culture of the Tibetan people. While Dharamshala is essentially a government town having a number of state government offices, Macleodgunj is the place to head for with its numerous hotels and fine restaurants serving a variety of cuisines. Kangra town itself has two important places to visit - The Brajeshwari Temple and the ancient Kangra Fort that overlooks a narrow stream flowing far below. The Pong Dam is a must for the nature lover as it is the largest water reservoir in north India and attracts thousands of migratory birds which fly over all the way from Siberia,

 
 
 

Afghanistan, Mongolia, Russia and China for the winter. The bird sanctuary is about 307 sq.kms and one can see Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, Terns have normally begun staying here year round and made it their breeding waters. Other winged visitors include the Bar headed geese, Grey lag and ducks like Pintail, Pochards, Mallards, Ruddyshells and cranes like the Sarus and Demosile. Chamba is another historical place in the region and is startlingly similar to the Sicilian countryside. Close by are the ancient Masroor Rock Temples and a few forts now in ruins. Agra is well known for its famous mesmerising Taj Mahal, the imposing Fort and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri 37 Kms away.

Day 1: Arrival airport and transfer to your hotel. Leave for Dharamshala and reach there by early evening. Check into a comfortable deluxe hotel in Macleodgunj. Evening stroll along the brightly lit main bazaar. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2: Visit the Tibetan Monastery adjacent to the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and take a walk to the small hamlet of Bhagsu 2 Kms away. Visit the temple and view a beautiful waterfall. Visit the church of St. John in the Wilderness having beautiful stained glass windows and a small graveyard of early British settlers and built among a grove of gigantic cedars Return to Macleodgunj and your hotel. Evening free.

Day 3 : Drive to Kangra town and visit the temple, fort and the ornate new Jain temple close by. Return to your hotel by the evening.

Day 4: Drive to the Pong Dam and enjoy the sight of thousands of migratory cranes, ducks and other winged visitors gliding on the lake. In the evening return to your hotel in Macleodgunj.

Day 5: Drive to Chamba visitng the ancient rock temples at Masroor en-route. Reach Chamba by early evening and check into your hotel.

Day 6 : Explore Chamba town and its famous Laxmi Narayan group of temples; the Rang Mahal a palace built in a mixture of Colonial and Saracenic architectural style; the Bhuri Singh museum displaying local artefacts, antiques and art; Evening free to wander around the bazaar shopping for interesting handicrafts and other local crafts. Overnight in your hotel.

Day 7: Drive to the beautiful small town of Bharmaur populated almost entirely by the nomadic shepherds - the Gaddis who spend winters here after their long treks into the upper Himalayan reaches in the summer. Visit the cluster of 84 temples with their intricately carved images. Evening return to Chamba and your hotel.

Day 8: Drive to the cantonment town of Pathankot. Check into a hotel till its time for the night train to Delhi.

Day 9: Arrive in Delhi early morning and the day is free to shop around for interesting handicrafts, clothes, metal craft and other interesting merchandise. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 10: Drive to Agra city - a 5 hour drive after an early breakfast. In Agra visit the legendary Taj Mahal, the Fort and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri 37 Kms away. In the evening drive back to Delhi and your hotel in time for dinner.

Day 11: Day free till its time to catch your onward flight to your next destination.
