The Extended Bodhgaya - Lumbini Tour

 
 
 
 
 

This tour takes you to the ancient town of Lumbini the birthplace of Prince Gautama later to become Lord Buddha. The tour also includes an entire sightseeing tour Lucknow city the capital of Uttar Pradesh state where you get to see ancient monuments and taste the cuisine of the Nawabs which attained culinary heights during the late 18 th and 19 th centuries.

Day 1: On arrival in Delhi we transfer to your pre-reserved hotel. Day free to relax or go on a half day tour of Old Delhi with its exotic merchandise and delicious rich cuisine, secret recipes of which have been handed down from generation to generation since the time of the great Mughals. Return to your hotel for the night after sampling the heady cuisine of the Great Mughals.

Day 2: Drive to the domestic airport to catch your flight to the holy Hindu city of Varanasi and on arrival check into your pre-reserved hotel. In the afternoon after lunch we take a half day tour to the hamlet of Sarnath 10 Kms away, where Buddha preached his first sermon. Return to Varanasi by evening and visit the bathing ghats and take a boat ride to see the beautiful sunset on the River Ganga. Return to your hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 3: After an early breakfast we take a 10 hour drive to the holy city of Bodhgaya and check into your pre-reserved hotel. The evening is free to stroll across this interesting town where Buddha attained enlightenment. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 4: We explore this 7the century built historic town located to the west of the Falgu River a tributary of the River Ganga. We visit the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree a descendant of the original Bodhi tree with a large red flat stone where Buddha attained enlightenment. This tree had been brought from Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka where it had been taken in the 3rd century BC by Sanghamitra Emperor Ashoka's daughter. Stroll around this holy city and an important centre for Buddhist studies. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 5: We leave for Patna City (10 hours) and on the way stop over at the once famous Buddhist University of Nalanda and Rajgir once the capital of the mighty Maghada Empire. Close by is also Gridhakuta - Vulture's Peak where it is said the Buddha preached and where the first Buddhist Council was held. Check into a pre reserved hotel in Patna for the night.

Day 6: We drive for about 10 hours to the small town of Gorakhpur en-route visiting the small town of Vaishali where Buddha announced his approaching enlightenment . We also stop briefly at the hamlet of Kushinagar where Buddha went into Mahaparinirvana. Reach Gorakhpur by late evening and check into your pre-reserved hotel for the night.

Day 7: After breakfast we drive 4 hours to the small settlement of Bhairawan where we check into your pre-reserved hotel before leaving for Lumbini the birth place of Buddha. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 8: A drive of about 5 ½ hours takes us to the small town of Balrampur. Enroute we visit Kapilavastu the capital of the kingdom where Buddha was born as Prince Gautama. On arrival in Balrampur we check into your hotel. In the afternoon we visit Sravasthi a spot where you get to see an image of the Buddha seated on a lotus petal. Return to your hotel for the night.

Day 9: A drive of about 4 ½ hours we drive to the capital of Uttar Pradesh state - Lucknow. After lunch we take a half day tour of this interesting city visiting the Bada Imambara a beautiful building with an enormous hall, the Chotta Imambara and the teeming marketplace of Husainabad famous for gold and silver brocades and exquisite silverware. We also visit the state museum and the clock tower before returning to your hotel for the night.

Day 10: Drive to the airport to catch your morning flight to Delhi. After arrival you check into your pre-reserved hotel. The entire day is free for leisure activities and shopping.

Day 11: Drive to Agra city - a 5 hour drive after an early breakfast. In Agra visit the legendary Taj Mahal, the Fort and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri 37 Kms away. In the evening drive back to Delhi and your hotel in time for dinner.

Day 12: The day is free to explore New Delhi with its massive colonial buildings in sandstone and granite today housing Government offices, the India Gate, the Delhi Zoo and the impressive tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun before returning to your hotel for the night. I nternational flights normally leave late at night or very early in the mornings. We transfer you to the airport for your onward flight according to the flight timings.
